About the Paideia Program
The Paideia Program at Sullivan High School is a selective enrollment, Options for Knowledge program that will provide students with a classical background for admission into the best universities.
Students of the Paideia Program will participate in weekly class seminars. These discussions will be led by the classroom teacher and will be devoted to an analysis of a classic work. Students will be expected to read primary sources, not merely textbooks. Often teachers will present an interdisciplinary approach in those seminars, linking history with English, mathematics with science. Through this seminar approach, students will become familiar with the greatest writers and thinkers, thereby giving them a liberal arts foundation for college. When students have completed four years of this rigorous program, they will be able to read more competently, think more clearly, and discuss ideas more fluently.
Students will also be expected to write frequent essays. This attention to writing in all disciplines will enable the student to handle longer expository themes and research papers in their college years.
Paideia students move through their four years at Sullivan in a cadre system, meaning for the majority of their school day they will share their classes with other honors-level students. By surrounding themselves with others who share their commitment to academics, they are more likely to stay on track and on task.
Admission
Admission is by application only. Any student with a Chicago address is eligible to apply. Student selection is based on grades, 7th grade test scores, and a mandatory interview. Students are recommended to have test stanines of 5 or above and a report card that demonstrates grades of Bs or above.
