Philosophy And Goals
Sullivan High School perceives the diversity of its student body as its primary asset and its principle challenge. This perception has guided Sullivan's efforts to create an appropriate and effective learning environment for all of its students. In developing its educational programs, Sullivan strives to take the varied ethnic, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds of its students into account , while simultaneously fostering the uniqueness inherent to every student. Sullivan's strength as an educational institution relies upon its successful accommodation to and encouragment of diversity within a context of shared educational experiences, and it hopes to instill a commitment to excellence in its students via an instructional program founded on such a premise. The primary mission of the Sullivan High School Community is to provide a strong education to all of its students, enabling them to become participatory citizens in a democratic society, life-long learners, and productive, working members of their local communities. Realization of this mission relies on the following beliefs:
- We believe that all students can learn.
- We believe it is the responsibility of the entire school community to help students learn.
- We believe that learning is a response to curiosity and is best fostered in active learning situations.
- We believe that the educational needs of a heterogeneous student body is multi-faceted and requires different instructional methods depending upon the course of study, faculty strengths, and student needs and talents.
- We believe that students must share in the responsibility for their own learning.
- We believe that each student's culture and heritage enriches the entire school-community and should be respected.
- We believe that teachers and administrators should continue to promote their own curiosity and intellectual development by engaging in professional learning activities and trainings.
